Working Member Policy & Procedures
The Co-op offers a working member program to help those in need or those who desire to participate in a more hands on experience, the opportunity to work in exchange for a discount on their food. The Co-op also relies on working members to serve on the Board of Directors and other Board committees.
Buyers Club: First, you must be a Buyers Club Member and be in good standing in order to work. To be in good standing means you are current with your address, do not owe any money and have paid your Buyers Club dues. All working members serve at the discretion of the manager in charge of the shift (s) available. Before you begin you are required to attend a working member orientation (orientation schedules posted on silver refrigerator at GEO or on our web site).
If you wish to serve as a working member you must sign up one week prior to the available shift, this is to ensure that the Co-op has adequate working member staff and that there is availability for you to be a working member and receive your discount. There are limited shifts available, yet all are necessary to fill.
Discount Terms: Your discount is based both on the number of hours you work and the size of your household (defined as one or more members who live together), according to the schedule on the next page.
To receive credit for hours worked, you must record your hours on the roster on the refrigerator along with your name and member number (phone number). Hours will be totaled on the 1st of each month and discounts are available the following Buyers Club. Your discounts are valid from the first Buyers Club of the month for thirty days (or until the next first Buyers Club of the month).
Maximum Discount: Buyers Club discounts will max out at 15% as our margins are very low for Buyers Club. Once the store front opens, there will be an opportunity to work for a greater discount.
Misuse or Abuse: Any misuse or abuse of the working member option will lead to a 30 day suspension of working member status and a forfeit of hours worked (meaning no discount will be honored for time worked). Misuse includes purchasing food for other members, friends or family members with your discount, steeling and not showing up to a scheduled shift with-out 24hours notice or finding a replacement for your shift.
The working member option is a privilege of a food cooperative and it is available to every member. Please be conscious when choosing to be a working member, you are a representative of our food co-op and what is good for the co-op is good for you!
