Crammed and jammed — local foods dominate
Carbondale Food Co-op
By Allyn Harvey
However you measure it — shelf for shelf, apple for apple or organic elk sausage for organic elk sausage — there isn’t a more fully-stocked, chock-full grocery in the valley than the Carbondale Community Food Cooperative.
The co-op, as it’s called by most of its customers, offers thousands of items — groceries, produce, meats and dairy products, dry goods, toiletries, vitamins and supplements. It’s a full-blown grocery in miniature — 450 square feet, to be exact — located on Main Street in the heart of downtown Carbondale.

About the Carbondale Community Food Co-op
The original vision for Carbondale Community Food Co-op (CCFC) was to build member equity in order to rent or purchase a store front that specialized in sustainable foods and products.
Today, the CCFC is Carbondale's only natural food store. The CCFC is located on Main Street, across from Peppino's Pizza.
The CCFC started as a organized a buyers club in response to a need to have healthy, affordable organic food in Carbondale.
In 2007 the CCFC began selling membership to build equity towards opening
a natural food store. Most co-ops build member equity until there is enough
money to open the store. The CCFC was offered a loan to get the store opened
as quickly as possible.
For over two years, the CCFC has been open. The CCFC relies on member support to continue thriving.
Members own the CCFC. Member shares and annual dues are needed to pay back our loan and explore the option of expanding the store. Without members, there could be no food co-op. It is the sale of member shares that create the fundamental co-op equity to maintain our store front and pay employees.
